An exhibition about bringing together a composite of disparate elements

September 3 - October 11

Monday-Closed, Tuesday and Wednesday 10-6, Thursday-Saturday 11-7. Sunday 12-6

Hybrid is a collection of work created by a group of goldsmiths that work in the cooperative studio and retail space Jewel Envy. The organizing of the group show began with collectively choosing our theme before individually interpreting it through metal. Jewel Envy is mounting this show to increase the awareness of the public about the medium of art jewellery and to provide exposure on a national level for the artists. Our group is composed of fully trained goldsmiths that have studied across a range of Institutions with the commonality of creative self-expression though metalwork.

Each artist was asked to interpret “Hybrid” within the context of the following statement:

“Hybrids are a composite of disparate elements.
These parts can include a wide array of physical, theoretical and conceptual elements. Spanning from the creation of fictional mythical creatures to the breeding of different animals for specific genetic characteristics hybrids exist in both the real world and the imagined one. They include the intermingling of cultures creating alternative traditions, to the blending of art and culture leading to hybrid genres. Words can be composed of elements drawn from different languages and ideas that have vast differences in interpretations across cultures.

The concept of hybridization spans across our imagination and into the physical world around us. The members of Jewel Envy will use this as the starting point for their individual and collective interpretations of the theme into finished pieces of sculpture and jewellery. Each piece will tells its own story of creation and the collection reflects the blending of hybrid minds and work within our own work environment”.
