Join us for the launch of Freeform Wire Art Jewellery, techniques for designing with wire, beads and gems, by local artist and author Gayle Bird. This book by Gayle, a juried member of Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design and jewellery artist, will teach you everything you need to know to create her signature jewellery designs.
Growing up in Cape Breton, Gayle’s biggest inspiration has always been colour — in a remarkable sunset, the bonanza of fall foliage, or the subtle shades of a snowdrift.
As a young girl, she was infatuated with searching for just the right art form, darting from painting to clay sculpting, paper art to web design, digital art to calligraphy — and back.
Now, she is delighted to portray her love of colour through wire-sculpted art jewellery. More than a decade of self-teaching has gone into developing her distinctive, spontaneous style.
Her pieces weave non-tarnish wire around a wide range of stimulating materials. The warmth of semi-precious gemstones, the unlimited colours of variegated firepolished glass, and the fascinating textures and history of beach glass all lend their own personality to each one-of-a-kind creation. In her steampunk-inspired line, the patina of vintage, salvaged materials contrasts sharply with the bright & modern designs in the surrounding wire.
