Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design

For those who are an experienced hand at rug hooking, this workshop with well-known author, teacher, master dyer, and designer Gene Shepherd will polish and sharpen the skills of each student present.
Gene's workshop will concentrate on using wide cut, #8, with students choice of two options, each on bleached primitive linen: 16" square pillow, or a six block 22" x 34" rug. The workshop will focus on geometrics and shading with a wide cut, that is shading with traditional and non-traditional swatches and dip and dump dyes. Also covered will be techniques needed for wide cuts and the use of values and textures to create shading and depth in their piece. The workshop will also include a morning or afternoon session on dyeing. Gene will bring some wool that students are welcome to use within their design but students are required to use their own wool for their project. Wool and other supplies will also be available for purchase. Students are asked to choose their design choice upon registration. All designs are on bleached primitive linen, square pillow is $55 US and rug is $115 US.
Although Gene Shepherd did not start rug hooking until 1998, it's been his only outside interest since that time. Described as a "self-taught artist who hooks by ear," Gene hooks, does commission work for individuals and museums, designs, dyes, develops tools, teaches and writes about rug hooking.
His work has been featured many times in Rug Hooking Magazine, ATHA Newsletter and A Celebration of Hand Hooked Rugs, XII, XIV & XV. In 2006, he became the Author/Editor of The Rug Hooker's Bible, and wrote and appeared in Rug Hooking Magazine's two volume DVD series, Rug Hooking At Home. He has also produced four other instructional downloads on rug hooking for the Internet Rug Camp, as well as the free tutorial on his web site. Gene has been director of the Cambria Pines Rug Camp, Cambria, CA, since 2000.
