Spectre/ On the Idea of Wilderness
Janice Wright Cheney, visiting artist
October 13 – 24, 2015*
*Opening Reception TUESDAY 13 October, 5:30 – 7pm
This exhibition presents two recent works by Janice Wright Cheney. Spectre is a mixed media installation that refers to the story of a specific polar bear, Buddy, who was held in captivity at the Banff Park Museum Zoo from 1922 until 1938. Crocheted snowflakes and crystals are suspended to create the bear’s silhouette, evoking a ghostly presence. Spectre was originally installed on site at the Banff Park Museum, Alberta in 2014. On the Idea of Wilderness (2015) is a series of photographs that explores the presence — historical, mythical, and real — of the cougar in the forests of Eastern North America.
