Trees are considered to be the ‘lungs’ of the planet. While providing oxygen, they help to regulate climate temperature, water drainage and soil erosion. In addition, many are a source of food. In much of the world’s folklore, trees and forests have provided protective and spiritual refuge and have been venerated for their powerful magic. In our theologies, trees have served as metaphors for the interconnection of all life, for connecting heaven and the underworld and for acting as portals to sacred knowledge. In this series of ceramic installation art projects, artists Marie-Andrée Côté, Hilde Lambrechts, Paula Murray and Grace Nickel poetically interpret ecological concerns while exploring the interconnected relationships between humans and the natural world.
