Skype Exchange with the Highland Guild of Spinners, Weaver and Dyers

  • Shuttleworks Fibre Arts De Winton, AB Canada (map)

The Crocus Country Fibre Arts Guild promotes the understanding and appreciation of spinning, weaving and other fibre arts in rural communities throughout the Alberta Foothills.

On January 10, members of the Guild will extend their fibre arts passion via Skype to Scotland, as the featured presenters at the Annual General Meeting of the Highland Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. The presentation will include a series of slides explaining the unique characteristics of the Foothills, and highlighting the work of the Guild and individual members. Following this will be a time of sharing, with the Scotland and Alberta participants both presenting works of unique interest.

Given the time difference, the Skype exchange will begin at 6 a.m. in Alberta (MST), which is 1 p.m. in Scotland (GMT). It is expected to last approximately 2.5 hours.

This is the second Skype connection between the Crocus Country Guild and Scotland. In October 2013, the Crocus Guild was the North American participant in a worldwide Skype exchange with spinners from seven countries. This exchange was organized by the Casteltown Spinning Group in Caithness, Scotland. The relationship forged through this experience led to the present opportunity to share further with our friends in Scotland the geography, climate, landscapes and fibre arts traditions that are unique to our part of the world.

Members of the Crocus Country Fibre Arts Guild reside in cities, towns and rural properties in the Foothills, as well as central and southern Alberta. Members are engaged through friendship, fellowship and a love of learning, sharing and developing skills in the full range of fibre arts. They are a regular feature at local libraries, fairs and schools, demonstrating weaving, spinning and other fibre arts, and providing hands-on educational experiences for residents and visitors of all ages within their community.
